Kala™

Overview

A friendly multiscript typeface with horizontal contrast. Supporting 3 scripts in 9 weights, the family embraces diversity of scripts and writing systems while at the same time unites them as a family.

Developed as a project during the MA Typeface Design at Reading, it is initially designed to answer the need of such type family in Lombok, Indonesia, where three scripts are used side by side: Latin, Balinese, and Arabic. With curvy cuts, the family looks playful and fresh. Coming with a wide range of weight variations from Thin to Black, the family is ready to support documents requiring rich typographic textures.

Kala brings Balinese, Arabic, and Latin into a lively mixed-script environment. Latin, numbers, punctuation, symbols, dates, and prices can move around the script samples, so a practical specimen might read like a museum label, a registration desk sign, or a bilingual event note. A useful line can include ᬒᬁᬲ᭄ᬯᬲ᭄ᬢ᭄ᬬᬲ᭄ᬢᬸڤمبوكاعــان, ڤندفتــاران, and السلام عليكم alongside No. 04, 12/08/2026, arrows, brackets, and short Latin descriptions. Add a price list, a queue number, a classroom note, a small map caption, and the phrase “return before 18:00” to see whether the page still holds together. The surrounding text can mention a visitor badge, a borrowed pen, a late bus, a lunch coupon, a missing receipt, and a poster printed at the wrong size. It is all useful noise. The test text can still behave like a real layout: dates, serial numbers, commas, brackets, and Latin words can sit around ڤمبوكاعــان or ڤندفتــاران with the pace of everyday information. A sample can include “Gate B”, “Table 3”, “10:45-12:00”, “50%”, and “Room 2B” while keeping the composition precise. The rest can be ordinary: lost umbrella at reception, water refill on the left, ticket checked twice, bus leaves in seven minutes. Add a line about hand sanitizer, two spare chairs, a broken printer, a meeting moved to Friday, and a handwritten label that simply says “do not throw away”.
