Questions
Useful answers before choosing or using a font license.
Understanding the basics
What is Marsnev, and what is Marsnev & Co.?
Marsnev is an alias of a Netherlands-based Indonesian type designer and researcher. He questions, studies, and draws letters. Learn more about him here.
Marsnev & Co., registered as MARSNEV in the Netherlands (KVK 42164038), is a company established to support Marsnev’s professional type design practice, especially as more projects began to involve collaboration. The addition “& Co.” indicates and credits the involvement of friends, collaborators, and contributors.
What is the difference between a typeface and a font?
In everyday use, “typeface” and “font” are often used interchangeably. In our licensing, however, we distinguish between them. A typeface is the visual design of the letters, numbers, punctuation, and other characters—it is what you see as the design. A font refers to the software, typically supplied in formats such as OTF, TTF, WOFF, or WOFF2, that allows you to install, access, and output the design of a typeface.
What does “font license” mean?
When you purchase a font, technically, you are purchasing a license to use the Font Software.
A font license is a binding agreement that grants the buyer specific rights to use a font under defined conditions. Each type of license includes terms that outline how the font can be used, such as the number of devices it can be installed on or whether it can be embedded in software, websites, or other digital platforms.
Choosing a license
What kind of license do I need to purchase?
The type of license you need depends on how you intend to use our fonts. We offer various licenses for different uses, such as Desktop, Web, App, and more. You can refer to our Licensing Page for detailed information.
Please pay attention to the word “fonts”, rather than “typefaces”. For example, when you purchase a Desktop License, you are allowed to install the fonts on your computer. Once the text has been exported as a static image, such as a JPG or PNG, the image may contain our typefaces, but it does not contain the Font Software itself. You may therefore publish, distribute, or sell that static artwork without needing additional licenses.
However, let’s say you create a graphic in Adobe Illustrator, and your client asks you for the original file and the fonts so they can edit it themselves. You cannot provide them with the fonts, as a Desktop License does not grant you the right to redistribute the Font Software.
What is the difference between À la carte and Company licensing?
À la carte licensing covers selected Desktop, Web, and App permissions using separate metrics. A Company License broadly covers the named person or organisation for its own work, with the tier based on organisation size.
Who should be named as the licensee?
Name the natural person or legal entity that will hold the rights. The purchaser and licensee do not need to be the same. For example, a designer or procurement department may make the payment on behalf of a client or company.
What happens if my company grows beyond the size covered by my Company License?
Company size is measured only at the time of purchase. If your company later grows beyond the size covered by the tier you originally purchased, your existing license remains valid, and no upgrade is required.
The license agreements offered are not suitable for our situation. Do you offer bespoke licenses?
Yes, we do. Our retail licenses offered on this website are suited to common small-to-medium-scale uses. Should you require volume licensing or a more tailored agreement, please contact us at office@marsnev.co.
Using the fonts
Do I need a Web License to publicly upload static images containing your typefaces?
No. A Web License is needed if you want to embed the fonts in a website.
Please pay attention to the word “fonts”, rather than “typefaces”, when purchasing a license. For example, when you purchase a Desktop License, you are allowed to install the fonts on your computer. Once you generate a static image, such as a JPG or PNG, it may contain our typefaces, but not the Font Software itself. You may therefore upload, share, distribute, or sell the static artwork without needing a Web License.
However, let’s say you create a graphic in Adobe Illustrator, and your client asks you for the original file and the fonts so they can edit it themselves. You cannot provide them with the fonts, as a Desktop License does not grant you the right to redistribute the Font Software.
Can I use your fonts for my logo design?
Yes. Purchasing a Desktop License allows you to use our fonts in static graphics and logotypes. However, the license does not transfer ownership of the underlying typeface design or give you exclusive rights over individual letterforms from the typeface. Trademark registration and protection depend on the particular mark and jurisdiction, so you should seek appropriate legal advice if this is important to your project.
Can I modify your fonts?
No. You may not modify, decompile, convert, rename, or create derivative Font Software unless your license expressly allows it.
You may, however, convert text to outlines in a design application and modify those outlines as artwork—for example, when creating a logo or illustration.
Are your fonts compatible with both Mac and PC?
Yes. Our desktop fonts are supplied in OpenType format, which is compatible with both macOS and Windows.
I’m experiencing an issue with a font. What should I do?
Please ensure that you have the latest version of the font installed. If the problem persists, contact us with a description of the issue and screenshots, if possible.
Do you offer font modifications or extensions?
Yes. If an existing Marsnev & Co. typeface needs additional characters, language support, styles, or other modifications, we can discuss a custom extension or adaptation.

Free fonts
Does Marsnev & Co. offer free fonts?
While our focus has shifted as we have grown, Marsnev, as an individual, has a history of providing free fonts through platforms such as Dafont. We will continue to support these fonts where possible and may offer other free fonts in the future, although this is not our priority. We encourage customers to explore our more refined and extensive retail offerings on this website. Please refer to Marsnev’s individual website for more information.
I noticed that Marsnev distributed free fonts through Dafont. Are they different?
The fonts available through Dafont are mostly Marsnev’s earlier individual works, often with less extensive character sets and fewer typographic features. For example, the original Lemon Milk distributed through Dafont is uppercase-only and has a more limited character and feature set, while Lemon Milk Pro, offered on this website, is an extended version developed to a higher professional standard, with more glyphs, styles, and features.
Our free fonts on Dafont remain subject to the terms and conditions stated on their respective pages. We encourage users to explore our more refined and extensive retail offerings on this website. For more information about fonts distributed through Dafont, please refer to Marsnev’s individual website.
